Jonas Stokke

Jonas Stokke's design philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that good design should enrich people’s lives. This principle is evident in every project, from furniture design to architectural hardware and industrial design. His commitment to excellence has earned his work a place in the permanent collection of the Norwegian National Museum, underscoring his contribution to contemporary design.

Jonas initiates the design procesas with a pen and a knife, quickly iterating through sketches and mock-ups in card. He believes in combining computer-aided design with the intuition of the eye and the hand. He feels closer to an author than a consultant, crafting each piece with an artisanal touch that reflects his dedication to the craft. At the same time, his technical background means the result often involves sophisticated engineering.

Listening to user feedback can at times glean valuable insights, although he is also focusing on trusting his intuitions. Design is not a democratic process.

Before founding his studio, Jonas was the co-founder of the renowned design duo StokkeAustad. The studio was known for pushing the boundaries of industrial design, creating pieces that garnered critical acclaim and clientele recognition. Their collaborative efforts came to a natural conclusion when Øystein Austad transitioned to an in-house role with Flokk, allowing Jonas to pursue his vision independently.

Today, his studio continues to push the envelope, blending innovative design with practical application. With each project, the studio aims to create products that not only meet the highest standards of craftsmanship but also stand the test of time, both in function and form.

His work has received wide critical and commercial acclaim from numerous successful collaborations from a diverse international client body.

He served a four-year tenure as Chairman of the Board at Designer's Saturday from 2018 to 2022.

Jonas teaches product design at Designinstituttet in Oslo and is an external examiner at KMD / University of Bergen and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
